The Netherlands are getting closer to the ratification of the UPC
On 28 June 2016, the first chamber of the Dutch parliament approved a bill that enables the Netherlands to ratify the UPC agreement. The instrument of ratification must now be deposited with the Council of the EU before the ratification comes into effect. When this has been done the Netherlands will most likely be the 11th country to ratify, out of the 13 countries necessary.
However, for the Agreement to enter into force the UK and Germany must also be among these 13 countries to ratify (France, being the third “mandatory” country has already ratified). The uncertainty regarding the UK and the Brexit situation of course still remains, and we will have to wait and see if the UK will in fact ratify the UPCA or not.
