EU database helps customs authorities identify IP piracy
The EU Customs Union has launched a new database which the owners of IP rights can use to apply for their rights to be enforced. The service is free of charge and rights owners can themselves update relevant information for the customs authorities.
The database has been set up primarily for use by customs officers and police across the EU. Previously these organisations have not always had access to all the information necessary to detect pirated goods. Now, to help the relevant authorities to distinguish between genuine products and fakes, rights owners can simply upload any appropriate information to the database. This includes everything from product photos and unique features to detailed packaging specifications and information about previous counterfeit products, etc. All the information will be translated into the official EU languages.
All that is required to make use of the new database is a valid trademark registration within the EU.
